I wrote this flash piece originally based on a prompt. It was a joy to write in the sense that I heard the character’s voice immediately in my head and the story just flowed from there. Even the title came to me easily (compared to how it normally does – like pulling teeth). I love writing humourous stories. Being silly and playful are human experiences/expressions that I think we down play too much when we become adults. I’ve been trying to lean into humour in my writing in recent years, but its hard. The world is not always a kind place and sometimes we gotta talk about difficult things. That doesn’t mean there is not room for stories about physicists who nearly “meltdown” the space-time continuum in a particle accelerator accident.
I shopped this story around for a bit, but humour speculative fiction isn’t an easy sale so I was glad when Graeme Cameron of Polar Borealis saw the value in it and agreed to include it in the current edition #27 October 2023 edition of his online magazine which is free to read via PDF. Graeme supports emerging Canadian writers via Polar Borealis (Fiction) and his Polar Starlight (Poetry) magazines. Check out his site here – Polar Borealis.ca You can read my story in a PDF version of the magazine here – https://polarborealis.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/POLAR-BOREALIS-27-October-2023.pdf
My story is on Page 20 of the magazine (Page 21 of the PDF) and my bio is on Page 50 (Page 51&52 of the PDF). Hope you enjoy.
